sleep apneaSleep apnea is a disorder that causes numerous pauses in breathing while sleeping due to the airways in the throat collapsing. It is estimated that as much as 50 to 70 million adults in the United States remain undiagnosed because many people fail recognize the symptoms because signs of the disorder can take many different forms. Without the right treatment, it can produce serious health complications while also decreasing your quality of life. If you suspect that you have sleep apnea in the Woodlands, there are 5 key signs that indicate that you need to undergo a sleep study.

1. Snoring

Snoring is the most common sign of the sleep disorder. In fact, 48% of those with it suffer from chronic snoring. It results when the soft tissues in the mouth and throat vibrate when airflow moves through them while you sleep. Although it is common from time to time, those with sleep apnea can experience it regularly due to the airways narrowing.

2. Daytime Fatigue

Despite sleeping all night, many with the condition suffer from daytime fatigue. The pauses in breathing can make it difficult to reach REM sleep, leaving you feeling tired throughout the day. It is estimated that nearly 38% of those with sleep apnea unintentionally fall asleep at least once every month. Although it may seem like nothing more than a hassle, over time it can lead to sleep deprivation. If this occurs, it lowers your cognitive abilities and can result in mood changes, including depression.

3. Sore Throat

It is not uncommon to wake with a sore throat when you suffer from sleep apnea. This is often due to mouth breathing while sleeping and chronic snoring. If you tend to wake with a sore or irritated throat without any apparent cause, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your dentist in the Woodlands for a sleep study.

4. Mood and Cognitive Changes

Over time, poor sleep quality will take a toll on your quality of life. It is not uncommon to develop changes to your mood, such as irritability or depression. You may also notice a change to your cognitive abilities, like difficulty staying focused, memory issues, or slow reaction times.

5. Heart Disease

If sleep apnea is not treated, it will cause complications for your overall health. The lack of proper oxygen levels place a strain on your body, your heart in particular. This can lead to cardiovascular disease, increasing your risk for heart attack and stroke.

Sleep Soundly

If a sleep study determines that you have the disorder, you have many options for sleep apnea treatment in the Woodlands, including an oral appliance or a CPAP machine. Your dentist will determine the best solution to help you sleep soundly.
