Sleeping in an unfamiliar location while hooked up to medical equipment can make anyone’s palms sweat, but there’s no reason to worry. You’ll be in a comfortable environment that will feel like a home away from home. Here’s how to prepare for your upcoming sleep study to prevent tossing and turning all night.

1. Discuss Any Medications

Discuss any prescribed or OTC medications and supplements you’re taking with your sleep study team to ensure they don’t affect the results. They may recommend skipping certain medications on the day of your study.

2. Avoid Napping

If you’re not getting quality sleep, it can be difficult making it through the day without a quick catnap. Unfortunately, it can make it harder to fall asleep later. It’s better to skip your afternoon nap so you can doze off quickly.

3. Skip Caffeine and Alcohol

Avoid any stimulants for a few hours before your sleep test. Caffeine and alcohol can affect the results and keep you awake at night.

4. Eat a Healthy Meal

Eat a healthy meal that will tide you over until breakfast. If you suffer from heartburn or other digestive issues, avoid any foods that may trigger your symptoms, so there’s one less thing that may keep you from getting some shuteye.

5. Pack Your Overnight Bag

Pack an overnight bag with everything you’ll need, including comfortable clothing, a book, or your favorite blanket. Don’t forget to pack hygiene products and clothes for the next day. Bring your insurance cards, medications, and any paperwork you’ll need.

6. Don’t Use Any Hair Products

You’ll want to shower before leaving your home, but don’t use hair products that are sticky, greasy, or oily. Electrodes will be placed on your body to monitor you while you’re sleeping. Hair care products can interfere with the electrodes.

7. Follow Your Bedtime Routine

If possible, stick to your regular bedtime routine. Following your usual habits will help you fall asleep faster to ensure the study is successful.

Sleep Peacefully for Accurate Results

If you’re uneasy sleeping in a bed other than your own, you aren’t alone. Your sleep study team will strive to keep you comfortable and relaxed. You can also practice breathing exercises to calm your body and mind.

If you have any questions about your upcoming appointment, don’t hesitate to contact your sleep specialist. You’ll have the peace of mind you need to sleep soundly for accurate results. Your physician will inform you if any additional care is needed, like treatment for sleep apnea.
